In partnership with Civil Society Coalition on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Psychosocial Support and Children’s Rights Resource Center (PST CRRC), Philippine Association for Child and Play Therapy (PhilPlay), and Mindfulness, Love, and Compassion (MLAC) with support from Plan International, CRC Asia consolidated a set of information, education, and communication (IEC) materials for communities on important themes such as child protection, breastfeeding and infant and young child feeding, and mental health and psychosocial well-being for adolescents and parents and caregivers of children during the COVID-19 community quarantine.
The pandemic laid bare the inequity in Filipino households’ access to the internet and digital devices. Considering that not everyone has access to the internet and might not be able to view and use the material online, the content was developed and printed as a set of handy fans, distributed to identified 22 partner local government units (LGUs) and community organizations in the regions of Luzon and Mindanao in 2020. Our partners used the fans as an awareness-raising tool during their food distribution efforts, community health sessions, mobile health clinics, and house-to-house visits. The materials were reprinted later in 2020 and distributed to communities through our partner community organizations. Some sets were disseminated through 12 community pantries organized by our partners in Metro Manila and nearby cities and municipalities.
This could not have been developed without the resources that make it. We also thank all these individuals and organizations that generously contributed their original work to this material:
- Child Protection Network Foundation, Inc.
- Dr. Aurora Libadia of the Philippine General Hospital, University of the Philippines Manila, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Newborn Medicine
- Regine Royo and Aubrey Rochael Ong of the Art to Inspire Crafts
Alongside the information, the material comes with a link to and a directory of service providers who have helpful information on their platforms and can respond to concerns about breastfeeding and infant and young child feeding and mental health and psychosocial support. We thank the following for their willingness to be part of the support group that comes with this informational material:
- Advent Moms
- Arugaan
- Doc Joanne, Pediatrics and Lactation
- Drs. Kenneth and Marj Sibayan of Baby Dudu Docs: Child Health and Breastfeeding Care Specialist
- Dr. Mianne Silvestre, for linking us up with these great health professionals, breastfeeding advocates, and mother support groups
We encourage communities to check, when they are able, the helpful resources on the official page of the National Nutrition Council.
The material also contains the contact details of most of the country’s reputable and official government and private, non-government hotlines responding to child protection and other related concerns such as the Bantay Bata 163 Hotline, Actionline Against Human Trafficking, PNP-Women and Child Protection Center, PNP Aling Pulis Hotline (24/7), Commission on Human Rights, WCPC Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division, NBI-Anti-Human Trafficking Division, Philippine National Police, SMART’s nationwide #ENDOSEC hotline, and UP PGH COVID-19 Hotline.
